Field Trip # 1: Waterton Lakes National Park

Check out the picturesque mountain scenery of Waterton Lakes National Park and visit one of U Lethbridge’s field sites, where in situ sensors, RPAS and airborne multispectral lidar technologies are being employed to monitor montane forest ecosystem regeneration following the devastating Kenow wildfire of 2017.

After a scenic drive through the Park the group will have the option of either visiting a research monitoring site or exploring a scenic gem and trailhead at the end of Cameron Valley. Weather- permitting, one group will see a demo of our RPAS lidar and/or multispectral sensors as we explain the multi-scale monitoring framework that is supporting several graduate student theses. The other group will travel farther along the valley to take in the breathtaking views around Cameron Lake. Members of either group may elect to rejoin the coach where they got off or hike back along the valley to rejoin the rest of the group at the Little Prairie rest area.

A packed lunch will be provided and can be eaten on the coach or picnic-style outside. After a couple of hours in this majestic landscape, the two groups will rejoin and drive back along the beautiful Akamina Parkway to the Waterton Village where everyone will be free for the remainder of the afternoon to wander the lakeshore, check out the many tourist activities and savour the excellent dining options.

There is a maximum total group size based on coach seating capacity, so register via ConfTool early for a guaranteed spot. Pack suitable clothing for the weather and stout walking shoes. Waterton can be either hot, cold, wet or very windy and there will be no cell service for most of the day! While a packed lunch and drink is provided, please plan to bring additional snacks and water as needed. And this is bear country, so stay close to your group. As they say in the Scouts ‘Be Prepared’!
